PlaytestCloud Playtester Guide: Qualification, Countries and Rewards

An official-source guide to PlaytestCloud signup, unpaid onboarding, country demand, recording requirements and location-dependent rewards.

Updated November 5, 2026 · IT9X Editorial

Quick answer

PlaytestCloud connects game developers with people who record themselves playing games and explain what they think as they play. You can apply without paying a subscription, but joining the panel does not guarantee invitations or regular income. PlaytestCloud says people can join its player panel from anywhere, while also saying that most current demand is for players in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Outside those markets, invitations may be less frequent.

Before paid invitations can begin, applicants complete an unpaid Playtester Onboarding that checks recording compatibility and spoken feedback in English. Rewards depend on completing the specific test well. Treat PlaytestCloud as an occasional research panel, not a job or predictable income source.

What PlaytestCloud is

PlaytestCloud is a remote game-research service. Game studios use it to observe how selected players experience a game, feature or concept. A participant may need to install a test build, play for a specified period, complete tasks, talk through reactions and answer a follow-up survey. Other formats can include interviews, multi-session tests, concept tests and standalone surveys.

This is not a professional quality-assurance job. Invitations depend on whether a project needs someone with your location, profile, devices and gaming experience. A complete profile cannot create demand where no matching study exists.

Countries: signup is broader than demand

PlaytestCloud's country FAQ says people can join its player panel from anywhere in the world. In the same article, it explains that most playtests currently request players in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. It warns people elsewhere to expect fewer and less frequent invitations, although international studies also occur.

That distinction matters. A statement that registration is open is not a promise that every applicant will be accepted, that every country receives studies, or that opportunities are distributed evenly. PlaytestCloud also says some people are ineligible to register but does not publish the full decision rules or review individual cases.

Location is only one matching factor. Developers can look for particular devices, gaming habits or demographics. Some invitations include a screener survey. Completing a screener means you may be considered; it is not confirmation that you have a place. PlaytestCloud says a participant is officially selected only after receiving the actual test or session invitation.

Keep your country, devices and games current in your profile. Do not use a VPN to misstate your location or change profile facts to fit a study. If qualifying steps consume meaningful time, use the framework in Screeners, qualifications and unpaid time to judge the opportunity cost.

Registration and the unpaid onboarding

The signup process leads to the Playtester Onboarding, previously called the qualification test. It is required before paid playtest invitations and is not paid. PlaytestCloud describes it as a review of both the applicant and the device.

During onboarding, the applicant follows in-app tasks, discusses the Tester Code of Conduct, describes gaming experience and records the device screen and microphone. Spoken English is required for onboarding. PlaytestCloud reviews whether the recording setup works and whether the applicant provides useful, continuous commentary.

Passing onboarding can make you eligible for the panel, but it does not establish how soon an invitation will arrive. Use an email address you expect to retain because PlaytestCloud uses the registered address to verify account ownership.

Current device requirements

The official device page currently lists Android phones and tablets running Android 10 or later, with named exclusions including Amazon Fire tablets, Android Go devices and some device families. For Apple devices, it lists iOS 16 or later and specifies supported iPhone and iPad generations. Windows PCs can also be added to a profile.

Requirements can change. Recording capabilities, free space, a stable connection and requested permissions also matter, so check the live compatibility article.

What a recorded test requires

Most onboarding and playtests require the participant to speak while playing. Unless an invitation explicitly says audio is unnecessary or permits another language, PlaytestCloud says testers should expect to speak English and continue talking throughout the recording. The goal is to explain reactions and decisions in real time, not merely narrate button presses.

A typical test can require all of the following:

  • Follow the duration, tasks and deadline stated in the invitation.
  • Record the screen and microphone with PlaytestCloud's software.
  • Think aloud clearly in a quiet environment.
  • Complete in-app tasks and the post-test survey.
  • Keep the unreleased game and all test material confidential.
  • Submit a focused, usable recording rather than leaving it running unattended.

The whole selected screen is captured while recording is active, so notifications or another app may appear. PlaytestCloud recommends Do Not Disturb. Its reviewers may edit a captured notification, but one could be missed; prevention is safer.

Before starting, close private apps, hide sensitive notifications and check which screen is selected. Use only the permissions needed for the test and follow the invitation's instructions. Read Protect personal data on earning platforms for a broader pre-recording checklist.

Participants accept an NDA before each playtest. Do not stream, share screenshots or discuss an unreleased game. The tester terms grant broad rights to use test results, including recordings and comments. No universal retention period was verified, so read the current terms and privacy policy.

Rewards and payment considerations

The invitation should show the reward for that specific playtest. PlaytestCloud says the amount can vary with the required tasks and length and is a one-time reward for completing the whole test well. Recording longer than requested does not automatically increase it. There is no reliable basis for predicting how many invitations a person will receive, so a per-test reward should never be converted into a monthly earnings promise.

Current FAQs say rewards go through Tremendous. Depending on location, options may include virtual Visa cards, gift cards, PayPal or charity donations. A US-dollar reward may be converted at redemption; check the country catalog and redemption screen.

The rewards FAQ says a well-completed test can be rewarded in up to three days with no platform payout threshold. Individual options can still have denominations, fees or expiry, so review the invitation and redemption screen.

The Tester Terms still describe an older PayPal process and different deadline. Because this conflicts with the newer Tremendous FAQ, save the invitation and ask support if the applicable timing or provider is unclear.

Never pay to join. Purchases in a live game can be real charges; close prompts unless the test supplies safe credentials and explicit instructions.

Who PlaytestCloud may suit

PlaytestCloud may suit someone who enjoys games, can explain reactions aloud in English, has a compatible device and is comfortable recording a screen and microphone. It may also suit a parent or guardian interested in an explicitly invited children's study: official guidance says the adult must add the child, provide consent through profile verification, remain with the child and let the child play.

It may be a poor fit if you need predictable work, cannot record in a quiet private space, do not want game developers to receive recordings and demographic context, or are outside current high-demand markets and expect frequent invitations. A person who dislikes screeners or cannot meet short invitation windows should also treat the opportunity cautiously.

The general minimum age for independent registration remains unverified. Children should not create or use an adult-style account on their own; follow the parent/guardian workflow and current official instructions.

Signup-to-reward checklist

  • Confirm that your country, device and operating system match current official guidance.
  • Read the tester terms, privacy policy and recording explanation before signup.
  • Use an email address you control and keep the profile truthful and current.
  • Complete the unpaid onboarding in a quiet place and speak in English throughout.
  • Treat a screener as consideration, not a confirmed invitation.
  • Read the actual invitation for duration, tasks, reward, deadline and special permissions.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb and close apps or messages that could expose personal data.
  • Follow the NDA and never share the game, screenshots or recording.
  • Complete every required task and the follow-up survey.
  • Check the Tremendous email, available reward options, conversion, fees and expiry.
  • Keep the invitation and reward emails until the payment is resolved.

FAQ

Can I register outside the USA, UK or Canada?

PlaytestCloud says signup is open broadly, but most demand is in those three countries. Registration guarantees neither acceptance nor a study.

Is the onboarding paid?

No. The official onboarding article says it is an unpaid qualification step required before paid invitations.

Do I have to speak while testing?

Usually. Onboarding requires spoken English, and most recorded tests require continuous commentary unless the invitation explicitly says otherwise or permits another language.

What devices are supported?

The current page covers Android, iOS/iPadOS and Windows PC with operating-system requirements and exclusions. Compatibility changes, so recheck it.

How does PlaytestCloud pay rewards?

Current FAQs describe Tremendous with location-dependent virtual cards, gift cards, PayPal or charity donations. The invitation and redemption page control the applicable terms.

How quickly are rewards delivered?

The current FAQ says up to three days for a well-completed playtest, but the public Tester Terms describe different legacy timing and payment language. Treat the current invitation and support response as the practical source for your test.

Does PlaytestCloud guarantee invitations?

No. Location, project demand, profile, device and screener answers affect selection. A completed screener is not an invitation.

Is there a fee to become a tester?

No. PlaytestCloud says it will not charge a subscription to join. Avoid real in-game purchases unless the test gives explicit instructions and safe test credentials.
